More than 80 teachers and students from 13 universities in Taiwan had a happy gather-together with us; they will conduct a six-day exchange and investigation visit here.
Feature film "Holding Hands with the Red Earth, Ten Years of Cross-Strait Love" led us to review the wonderful story of Zhanjiang and Taiwan college students' summer camp. In July 2008, the first summer camp for college students in Zhanjiang and Taiwan was held through the efforts of Feng Guanfu, a famous psychologist, who was born in Zhanjiang and lives in Taiwan. So far, the summer camp has been held for ten times, and nearly 1,000 teachers and students from 37 Taiwan universities and colleges have visited Zhanjiang and Lingnan Normal University (LNU) to participate in the summer camp together with more than 5,000 teachers and students from Zhanjiang universities and colleges.
"The summer camp has been held continuously for ten years, an effort that is rarely seen in universities across China though it is not unique", said Liu Minggui, the Party Secretary and Principal of LNU. According to him, the Zhanjiang-Taiwan summer camp activity is an epitome of the cooperation and exchange between our university and Taiwan universities. Taking summer camp as a bridge, LNU has actively expanded cooperation and exchanges with Taiwan universities in teaching, scientific research, talent training and other aspects and achieved remarkable results. It has become one of the universities with much influence in terms of cooperation between the mainland and Taiwan and the highlight of exchanges between the province and Taiwan.
Liu Minggui recalled the profound friendship between Zhanjiang and Taiwan universities in the past ten years. He believed that this not only witnessed the achievements of our school's foreign exchange and cooperation work, but also witnessed the achievements of cross-Strait exchange and cooperation. He said that in the next decade, our university would, as always, make every effort to provide more distinctive and exciting projects for friends from Taiwan to promote more practical and in-depth cooperation between colleges and universities across the Taiwan Strait in terms of faculty sharing, student training and scientific research cooperation and enhance the profound friendship between young college students in Zhanjiang and Taiwan.
"Every time I come to Zhanjiang and Lingnan Normal University, it is just like returning to my home." This is the sixth time for Wu Qingji, President of Taiwan University of Education, to come to Zhanjiang as the general leader of the summer camp. He hopes that the platform of summer camp could further strengthen the exchanges between young people on both sides of the straits, deepen the national emotions and make contributions to the peaceful development of cross-Strait peace.
Chen Linzuo, Deputy Director of the Taiwan Affairs Office of Guangdong Province, introduced the social and economic development in Guangdong and the exchange between Guangdong and Taiwan. According to him, the youth is the future of the nation, the backbone of the country and the main force of the new age, so they should promote the realization of the Chinese dream together. He hopes that young people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait will enhance their sense of national identity, set up ambitious goals and strive for the prosperity of the country and nation with lofty ideals.
Zhong Li, member of the Zhanjiang Municipal Standing Committee and Minister of the United Front Work Department, presented the camp flag to Wu Qingji and announced the beginning of the summer camp. He hopes that this summer camp become Taiwan young college students' trip of mood, understanding, learning and friendship, and expects that they can share what they had seen and heard during this camp to more friends and relatives in Taiwan. He also hopes that college students in Zhanjiang and Taiwan can have sincere exchanges during the camp activities, further deepen friendship and strive to be participants, propagandists and promoters of education culture in both places.
"In this scorching July, students from Zhanjiang and Taiwan enjoy a gather-together with great joy. I just hope every beautiful moment can last longer!" Zhang Qiongzhu, student representative of our school, and Zhang Ting’an, representative of Taiwan students, made speeches at the opening ceremony.
