Delegation from University College Cork and South China Normal University Visits LNU

       Lingnan Normal University News Center News: On the morning of November 8, a delegation headed by Paul Giller, member of the Royal Irish Academy and professor of the University College Cork, and Professor Li Shaoshan, Associate Dean of the School of Life Sciences of South China Normal University, visited Lingnan Normal University (LNU) for exchange. LNU President Lan Yanze cordially received the guests. Vice President Dai Shu and the guests held a meeting at the No. 2 Conference Room. Dai Shu awarded a visiting professorship to Professor Paul Giller and Professor Li Shaoshan, respectively.

Dai Shu extended his warmest welcome to Paul Giller and Li Shaoshan. He introduced the campus culture, the century-old history, the geographical location, teachers and students, major setup and teaching achievements of the LNU in an illustrated way. He believes that Paul Giller’s visit will greatly promote the cooperation between our university and Irish universities in scientific research programs, and will also play an important role in the smooth progress of the international exchange of our university.

Paul Giller said that every visit to China has deepened his understanding of China and made him more aware of the importance China attaches to education. He also hopes to contribute to the development of the Lingnan Normal University in terms of scientific research and other aspects. Paul Giller gave a brief review of his own education background, research fields and academic achievements. He introduced the history, disciplines and campus scenery of the University College Cork. He also introduced the basic situation, strategic objectives and research facilities of the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences he works at. He expressed the hope that he could contribute to the development of the LNU in terms of scientific research cooperation, curriculum management and education and teaching, and do his part for the development of the LNU.

Li Shaoshan briefly reviewed the exchange and cooperation between Paul Giller and South China Normal University, and said that Paul Giller has made an indelible contribution to the academic development of the South China Normal University, especially the School of Life Sciences, and the two sides have maintained good academic exchanges over the years. He said that he hopes to play a role as a bridge and link in the exchange and cooperation between the Lingnan Normal University and the University College Cork, and provide corresponding contact and support.

Chen Daohai, Dean of the School of Life Sciences and Technology of the LNU, gave a brief introduction to the basic situation of the school, including the faculty, discipline advantages, research teams and research fields. He expressed great expectation for Paul Giller and Li Shaoshan to guide the scientific research and teaching of the school, and hoped to cooperate in biological research programs such as mangrove forest and marine ecology.

Zheng Zhijun, Director of the International Exchange and Cooperation Department, presided over the meeting. Relevant responsible persons from the Human Resources Office, the International Exchange and Cooperation Department and the School of Life Sciences and Technology, as well as teachers’ representatives attended the meeting.
